Word Study

Brainstorm Kangaroo-related words with the children.

Sort words which have been brainstormed into the categories of sound, movement and features.

Create a Kangaroo dictionary of words which the class use frequently.

Search for rhyming words, using Kangaroo words as a base. For example, moo and clue.

Put different species of Kangaroos into alphabetical order.

Create word shapes of Kangaroo words - maybe the shapes could be made to look like the Kangaroo themselves.

Sort Kangaroo words into word sleuths.

Kangaroo Find-a-words are always a favourite.

Reading

Create Kangaroo cloze activties from text being studied in class.

Develop yes/no questions related to Kangaroo or children can make their own.

Construct a class Kangaroo fact big book. For example, Kangaroo can . . My Kangaroo is . . . My Kangaroo eats. . .

Children can make a Kangaroo fold-a-book. An A4 page can be folded into 4 parts and each side can contain information about their particular Kangaroo. Great for displays.

Develop a Kangaroo quiz to use as a comprehension activity to follow-up text studies in class.

Children can write stories about their favourite Kangaroo including Who, What,Where and When.

The children can find out lots of things about the special features of Kangaroo. Using these facts the children can write an acrostic poem. Start each line of the poem with a letter from the word Kangaroo.

Use information gathered throughout the topic to develop a Kangaroo fact sheet.

Create a character profile based on a Kangaroo. Include the following information, name, time period, diet, meaning of Kangaroo name, size, family and where found.

Children imagine what would be involved in keeping a Kangaroo as a pet. Develop a plan for keeping a Kangaroo as a pet.

Rhyming poetry using Kangaroo names and descriptions.
